As of this writing, I don’t know if Rev. Jones will meet with the people behind the NY mosque project, nor do I know what will come of this meeting. However, I cannot see things go bad for Jones. Given the actual climate and tensions, he could just do about anything and he’d be fine. Maybe I’m overly concerned, but I feel if he did something stupid, or if the meeting did not go the way he wanted to, he could just say anything, and people would likely believe him over “the jihadists” that want to build a “victory mosque” “at” Ground Zero. Maybe I misjudge the man, but with his apparent hatred of all things Islam, I can’t see things going too well.
Sadly for him, though, I can see he is in a pinch. Maybe when he had the idea of the Koran burning, he genuinely thought it was a good idea. Now, maybe he realizes it is not, but the current situation makes it hard for him to back down without losing face.
It might also be the same for the people behind the Mosque project: maybe they feel if they back down new, it would have consequences over other Islamic projects. For now, I guess we’ll just wait and see.
